Dubai’s Next Metro Marvel: Sheikh Mohammed Lays Foundation for the Blue Line

Blue line

Dubai Creek Harbour, June 9, 2025, a place where innovation and aspiration come together, another record has been made. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, has turned the first foundation stone of what is set to become one of the most iconic developments to the transport network in the city: the Blue Line Metro.

And no– it is not another station. It is a moving vision.

A Towering Start

The event was held at the location of the firstBlue Line station- soon to be Emaar Properties Station– embedded in the core of Dubai Creek Harbour. This is not an our ordinary metro stop as it was designed to stand at an astonishing 74 meters tall. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, one of the most well-known architecture firms in the world, is wrapping it in a shiny gold cylindrical shape, making it the tallest metro station in the world.

It’s futuristic. It’s bold. And it is all Dubai.

What is the Blue Line?

The game changer is the Blue Line Metro. It will cover a distance of 30 kilometers, connecting Dubai International Airport to Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Festival City, moving some of the hitherto under-linked districts into the fast lane. The Blue Line, with its 14 stations (5 of which are underground) and 3 interchange points connecting to the Red and Green Lines, is going to become the new definition of daily commuting to thousands of people.

It is intended to open on September 9, 2029, which will be the 20th anniversary of the first ride on Dubai Metro back in 2009.

Coincidence? Definitely not.

Built for People, Powered by Purpose

The Blue Line is also constructed keeping in view the requirements of today, and tomorrow, as opposed to older infrastructure that was constructed using yesterday’s requirements.

  • Platinum-certified Green Building- intelligent use of energy, environmentally conscious, and climate-friendly.
  • Integrated mobility – areas of e-scooters, bicycles, EV charging points, and ride-hailing bays.
  • Built for all – people of determination, families, and tourists will have complete accessibility.

A huge 1.3 km bridge over Dubai Creek on the line will not only be an engineering marvel- it will also provide one of the most spectacular skyline views in the town.

The Million Moving Investment

The Blue Line is not a petty project as it will cost between AED 20.5 billion and AED 56 billion, which is a nation-building investment. The authorities anticipate more than 200,000 passengers per day in 2030 and 320,000+ in 2040. Not only is that good news to commuters, but it is also a giant leap towards reducing road traffic by 20% in some of the busiest corridors in Dubai.

And the Emaar Properties have bought naming rights of the station over 10 years, which gives a clear indication of the faith of the privately owned business in the vision of infrastructure of Dubai.

A Smarter City on the Move

The Blue Line is not all about metro lines on the tracks- it is a step towards the 2040 Urban Master Plan of Dubai. The goal? Building a “20-minute city” – making schools, offices, healthcare, and entertainment within 20 minutes on foot, by bike, or by public transportation.

Final Stop? The Future

What merely began as a foundation stone is already proving out to be a foundation of a lot more; cleaner transportation, improved connectivity, and more intelligent city life. Dubai is demonstrating yet again that its infrastructure is not only functional, but inspirational with the Blue Line.
